The problem with Messi right now is that people expect so much for him to the extent that he can deliver 8/10 performances consistently and people talk like he was shit.
Messi was really, really, really good in this tournament. Not Maradona in 1986 good no, but still he was constantly a huge threat, created more chances than anyone else and scored 4 goals. He constantly received the ball and completely skinned 1 or 2 players like it was nothing to him.
I think that objectively if you took away the names, reputation and expectation that really there's very little to choose between Messi, Robben, Muller or Rodriguez. Robben was really poor against Argentina and completely bottled his one chance (much like Messi tonight only Messi did create more than Robben did vs Argentina). James was kicked out of the game against Brazil and had little impact. Muller didn't have a good game against France or Argentina either. The problem is that people expect Messi to be amazing all game every game where as no one cares if Robben/Rodriguez or Muller don't touch the ball for 20 minutes or have entire poor games.
If Messi was injured this world cup and an 21 year old had played exactly as he did in it we've have been completely blown away, talking about the next big thing in football while Florentino Perez prepared a £70m bid.
But unfortunately with Messi if he's not beating three players and scoring from 30 yards every game (or even more than once seen as he did that in the groups and still didn't get that much praise) then he's having a poor tournament.
I don't think Messi is a particularly undeserving winner because I don't think any player had a real career defining performance. There was definitely no Zidane in 2000, Maradona in 86 or Platini in 84 at this tournament. Of the big four I've mentioned though I don't think there's much to choose between them and all of them have their downsides.
